Agriculture and Food
Agriculture forms the basis for human civilization. Yet, hunger remains the number one cause of death and poor health worldwide. As our population continues to grow, we need to both increase the quantity and quality of food produced in order to combat extreme poverty and the related mortality. However to achieve these goals while dealing with the consequences of climate change and reducing our environmental impact will require a better understanding of plant and animal production systems, as well as post-harvest technologies allowing the development of smart systems for the future.
Food is deeply tied to our human experience. As well as its role in sustaining life, food has social, community, cultural, and religious roles. Food is deeply tied to health, and understanding foods and food processing is a deep part of what it means to be human.
Our department has a wide range of specialists looking at various aspects of agricultural production, food science and processing.
