The University of Tsukuba Irvine Office was officially established in June 2014 under a Memorandum of Understanding between the University of Tsukuba and the University of California, Irvine (UCI), a Campus-in-Campus (CiC) Research Partner.
The Regents of the University of California on behalf of UCI first entered into an agreement with the University of Tsukuba in April 2013 to establish an educational exchange program as a continuing effort to improve education and research. The purpose of the cooperation between the two universities is to promote reciprocal interests in teaching and research activities, as well as enhance understanding of their economic, cultural and social environments.
Located along coastal Orange County in Southern California, UCI shares many similar characteristics with the University of Tsukuba. Both are young universities and are recognized as a Top University under 50 in their respective countries. Moreover, both universities have three Nobel Prize laureates each in chemistry and physics. For the past several years, possibilities have been explored to expand international collaborations and exchanges at departmental levels.
