Lecture held on “Modern Japanese Society – its Characteristics and History”

On August 28, 2017, Professor Masaru Tonomura of the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences conducted a two-hour lecture to teachers of Japanese language at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU). The theme of the lecture is on the characteristics of modern Japanese society and its historical background which covered the following topics: modern state formation during the late Tokugawa and Meiji Periods, colonization, democracy, the world war, postwar reforms, among others. One interesting question posed was why Japan was not colonized in the Meiji Period.
