The Sao Paulo Office of the University of Tsukuba arranged the study trip for its ASIP students from Japan. ASIP stands for the Area Studies Innovation Program, a five-year degree program combining a bachelor's degree and a master's degree at the University of Tsukuba's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. A mandatory one year study abroad period is incorporated into the regular curriculum.
On February 29, 2016, students in the ASIP Program visited plantations run by Japanese-Brazilians who immigrated from Japan. They listened to the challenging stories of firsthand experiences of working on the farm for 50 years.
