Graduate School of Comprehensive Human SciencesDual Master's in Medical Science

The course is taught in English and covers a wide range of topics including clinical medicine, medical physics, cancer care and community medicine. This variety allows students to focus on an aspect of medical science that suits them, and encourages them to become fully fledged professionals — either working as highly skilled specialists, or as researchers and educators with the aim of improving medical care around the world.

Graduate School of Comprehensive Human SciencesMaster's of Public Health Program

Students can choose one of two options within the course, based on their academic background, professional experience and future plans. The standard approach takes two years, with the second year devoted mainly to a research project and thesis on an aspect of public health. This is recommended for those thinking of pursuing a PhD in their research project area and is the path chosen by Vincent, whose thesis is on the awareness among Haitian mothers of hypertension during pregnancy.

Graduate School of Humanities and Social SciencesMaster's Program in Economic and Public Policy

Scholars can choose one of two tracks — economic policy or public policy — depending on whether they want to develop skills in quantitative analysis and econometrics or crave a broader, multidisciplinary approach to economics that includes social and political dimensions. Faculty members include Motoko Shuto, who specializes in the fields of politics and international relations in Southeast Asia and transnational labor migration in East Asia, and Mari Minowa, a former economist with the World Bank who specializes in the fields of development economics, social sector policies in developing countries and the economics of Latin America. Course professors draw from extensive academic as well as professional experience working in international organizations and have strong interests in education.

The faculty includes American, Chinese, and Korean nationals, and is rich in distinguished professors who are willing to devote a substantial amount of time to discussions with students interested in their respective research field.

Graduate School of Pure and Applied SciencesMaster's Program in Nanoscience

The University of Tsukuba has developed a Nanoscience Masters course aimed at training the next generation of ‘nano’ practitioners. The program consists of coursework and a research component. Students are expected to complete three compulsory subjects, six core elective subjects and 11 specialized subjects as well as conduct an original research project, within the two-year duration of the course. This course aims to instill graduates with three broad attributes — theoretical competence, practical capability and research experience.

The curriculum covers five broad areas: Olympic and Paralympic education, which delves into areas such as the Olympic legacy; sports management — taking students through everything from event management to sport finance and economics; sports science and medicine, including key topics such as anti-doping and exercise physiology; sport for development and peace; and teaching, coaching and Japanese culture — which looks at state-of-the-art teaching and coaching and its integration with aspects of Japanese culture, such as hospitality.

Graduate School of Business ScienceMBA in International Business

During the two-year program, students undertake core units from the traditional business discipline areas of Business Strategy and Organizational Management as well as the more international and technology-focused areas of Applied Information and International Adaptability. With half the faculty made up of foreign lecturers and business leaders, these courses provide students with a solid international grounding to integrate into their working lives. In their final year they have the option of undertaking a practically orientated research project, rather than completing an academic thesis. This project can be related directly to their daily work or be centered on business development or entrepreneurship. Throughout the course, students are also expected to take part in the variety of seminars given by visiting international professors and global business leaders.

The University of Tsukuba’s one-year Special Program for Central Asian Countries in International Relations and Public Policy is one of two English language degrees in Central Asian studies offered by the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences. It accepts program applicants from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan.
