Global Commons was established as a place to provide a one-stop service for international exchange and support the TSUKUBA Study Abroad program.
GC is made up of the Campus Globalization Division, International Exchange Support Division, Global Staff Development Office, International Support Office, and Area Commons. The Campus Globalization Division operates the Student Commons as a forum for student exchange and Overseas Commons as a campus-in-campus office for overseas major partner universities. The International Exchange Support Division provides advice and support on acceptance and dispatch of international students by faculty members with a wealth of experience in international exchange. The Global Staff Development Office conducts a wide variety of training operations to strengthen internalization response capacity of administrative employees. The International Support Office provides support by consultations for livelihood support, holding of networking events, etc. with implementing application by proxy of the Application for Certificate of Eligibility for foreign faculty members and employees, researchers, etc. and their family members. Furthermore, Area Commons provide assistance and support in international exchange to students, faculty members, and employees at education organizations Academic Service Offices which serve as the contact with each education organization.
To remain viable in the globalizing international society
The population ages and fewer babies are born at a rapid pace in present-day Japan. The era of high-speed economic growth is giving way to a mature society as symbolized by a long 20-year economic slump. The time when one has been able to live centered at Japan has ended in the 21st century. If you sit by idly, Japan will shrink and slide back.
By contrast, the world is in a mighty wave of change. The degradation of the global environment, resource and energy problems, healthcare problems, industry reinforcement problems, internet society problems distributed around the world in a flash, unequal society, and other problems are global issues on every count.
We would like students to become human resources capable of leading the resolution of these global issues and global activities of humanity from a global perspective by turning their attention to the world.
Abilities and qualities as global human resources
What abilities and qualities should one acquire to become global human resources? First, communication ability as a basic competency of global human resources, in particular, hands-on English proficiency is critical. These are listening, speaking, reading, and writing abilities as well as comprehension.
Just speaking English is insufficient. At the summit of quality basic skills and expertise needed in intended areas and fields, the abilities to articulate and transmit by logically processing one’s thoughts, ability to grasp the opinion of others in English, and ability of self-expression through English are also important. Furthermore, contributive qualities are required for knowledge-building and changes for the future to make positive use of flexibility that takes advantage of organizational and social diversity, to mobilize individual efforts with multiple backgrounds including culture, character, and specialization, and to overcome the sense of stagnation of a mature society .
TSUKUBA Study Abroad Program
The program to learn abilities and qualities like these is the TSUKUBA Study Abroad Program. An environment of a “campus where the world is a place of learning“ is created with the implementation of the TSUKUBA Study Abroad Program comprised of “Global Courses” that incorporate overseas study in the curriculum.
Our university has concluded more than 340 inter-university international exchange agreements with the world’s universities and various cooperation programs are implemented between these partner universities. We have dispatched more than 2,000 students to partner universities. However, it’s true that there are also impediments to overseas study including anxieties about one’s everyday life in the host university such as the language and safety, odds against job hunting, great economic burden, and difficulty in recognition of credits. The education program to make these “anxieties about overseas study” to “it’s a good thing that I went” is the TSUKUBA Study Abroad Program. At the same time, we would like to introduce the reform of an education system with international recognition and reform of the entrance examination system.
Overseas Offices and Cooperation among Japanese and Overseas Universities, Industries, and the Government
Our university has established 13 overseas offices in the 12 countries and regions of Tunisia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, China (Beijing and Shanghai), Germany, France, US, and Brazil. Cooperation among overseas offices, exchange partner universities, Japanese and overseas universities, industries, and the government is important to increase acceptance of international students from overseas and dispatch of students overseas and implement the “internationalization in everyday life” and “world is a place of learning”. We are planning to promote various student assistance measures with the aid of these cooperation activities.
