Doctoral Program in Life Sciences and Bioengineering

This program aims to conduct leading education and research in the clarification of functions in organisms and the development of their functions. Recent bio-science and bio-technology have mainly been focused on the molecular biology of genes. Based on this, we need to understand static and dynamic behavior of cells more precisely with a biochemical and molecular levels and develop the methods to utilize these functions. Moreover, we will have to develop materials related to our everyday lives that make use of the properties of biological resources. Given this situation, in order to train students to be active researchers in the fields of bio-science and bio-technology in the new era, the program is structured in a fusion of two principal major fields; Bio-chemistry of Cell Functions and Engineering Science of Biological Functions. Education and research guidance is carried out based on an interdisciplinary curriculum that includes biology, chemistry and engineering. The area of Biochemistry of Cell Functions consists of six key research fields and one cooperative research field under the cooperative graduate school system providing education and research relating to analysis and functional development focused on the dynamic behavior of living cells, proteins with important communication functions, nucleic acid, enzymes and biologically active agents, using cutting-edge molecular biology techniques. The area of Engineering Science of Biological Functions consists of five key research fields and three cooperative research fields, providing education and research focused not only on enzyme and microorganisms, but also plant and animal cells, as well as the development of materials that utilize and mimic the functions of biological materials. Through such basic and applied education and research, we are aiming to cultivate highly creative researchers who have a broad outlook that takes in both basic and applied science.
